If one school district is taken over by Bevin, it won’t be the last. April 25, 2018 - 4:11pm

By BRAD BOWMAN

Kentucky Democratic Party

If one school district is taken over by Bevin’s appointed state board of education, it won’t be the last.

In less than two weeks, the board stacked with new Bevin appointees pressured the resignation of the former commissioner of education — an advocate for public education — and put in his place the charter school advocate Wayne Lewis as interim commissioner.

Lewis has already started making calls for reform congruent with Bevin’s bidding.

Iconic Coffee Factory in Houston to Shut Down April 24, 2018 - 3:43pm

You may remember the strike at Maximus Coffee Group in Houston in 2013. Late last week, we learned the remaining 279 union employees at what was once a landmark Maxwell House plant are soon going to be out of work.

Sadly, the coffee processing business in the U.S. has gone the way of many other lines of manufacturing.

The Texas AFL-CIO stood in solidarity with workers at the plant in the Second Ward when they walked off their jobs to protest company proposals to cut pay by nearly half, eliminate a 401(k) match and increase the cost of health care by 30 percent.

Worker Memorial Day 2018 April 24, 2018 - 3:50pm

Local workers, officials and community members and the Rock County Labor Council (RCCLC) commemorate workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries while on the job. They also speak out against the Trump administration’s aggressive actions against workplace safety, calling them a dangerous slap in the face to working people.

The most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 105 workers were killed in Wisconsin in 2016, and many more suffered from occupational diseases.
